Stevens Taekwondo Academy News - Vol. 4: August 2005

Recent Testings

Seven Stevens Taekwondo Academy students earned new or higher black belts in testing at the YMCA recently.

Daniel Zierke moved up to third degree black belt following his demonstration of advanced kick combinations and sparring skills, the taebek form and a speed hook kick.

Adam Berrymanearned a second degree black belt by shattering a two-inch board with a spinning sidekick, sparring and performing the keumgang form and advanced kick combinations.

Jonathan Whitford, Jeffrey Lane, Mark Poirier, and sisters Stefanie and Morgan Wolosek achieved deputy black belt level. These new black belts performed five taegeuk forms, demonstrated kicks and sparred. Whitford broke his board with a spinning hook kick, Lane broke two boards with a front kick axe kick combination, Poirier sliced his board with a spinning hook and Stefanie and Morgan Wolosek snapped their boards cleanly with spinning sidekicks.

Master instructor Dwight Stevens awarded three trophies for testing excellence to color belts. Red belt Nicholas Oasen won first place, green belt Ashley Bloch earned second place and high yellow belt Whitney Lotzer took home the third place trophy.




Black Belt News

August began with the marriage of Kimberly Wanta to Justin Buehler and it was a black belt event with nine masters and eleven other black belts attending. Some of the had already gone home when this group was photographed.

Third dan Bill Jenkins has headed east: he was inducted into the U. S. Naval Academy late in June. Bill is currently undergoing the first phase of the training, a rigorous plebe summer, similar to boot camp. Bill's father, retired Navy Captain William Jenkins administered the oath of office to him. Second dan Teri Jenkins will keep us updated on son Bill's progress.

Fifth dan John Henkel will be starts his graduate studies in electrical engineering at UW-Madison in September.

Fifth dan Jim Henkel has started a taekwondo club at the Medical college of Wisconsin (in Milwaukee), where he is in his third year of the PhD program.

NOTE: The YMCA has adjusted the lesson dates for this session due to planned refinishing on the floors.

  • NO CLASSES Aug 30 and September 1.
  • Normal classes September 6 & 8 (the 6 th week of this session)
  • September 13 -- first class of new session
  • October 16 -- belt promotion testing, 1 p.m. All Purpose Room, YMCA
  • December 11 -- belt promotion testing, 1 p.m., YMCA gymnasium
